Masonry and Structural Steel Working Together Words: David Biggs MayJune 2008 Industry News Masonry and Structural Steel Working Together Software to design “hybrid” masonry and steel structures – buildings with reinforced masonry infill and structural steel framing analyzed as an integrated structural system – debuts this summer. Developed by Bentley Systems in tandem with the International Masonry Institute (IMI), the National Concrete Masonry Association and David Biggs of the structural engineering firm, Ryan-Biggs Associates, it allows designers to optimize the structural steel frame and analyze the masonry infill, even with openings, for both shear and gravity loads. A fall seminar series will help designers learn the software. For details, call 1.800.IMI.0988. MD
